Oud is nothing like the fresh, clean scents that dominate mainstream Western fragrance. It’s deep, complex, and sometimes animalic or smoky. First encounters can surprise people — even disappoint them if they’re expecting something sweet or familiar.

Step 1: Start with an Accessible Oud
Not all ouds are created equal. If you’re new to oud, start with blended fragrances that use oud alongside softer, more familiar notes:
Best starter ouds for beginners:
- Oud Honey — Sweet, warm, and approachable. The honey and woody notes make the oud feel familiar and comforting.
- Imperial Oud — Inspired by the best of niche oud perfumery, with a more restrained, wearable profile.
- White Oud — A lighter, more floral interpretation of oud. Soft and elegant.
Step 2: Know Your Formats — Attar vs Spray
Spray (Eau de Parfum): Easier to apply, projects more, familiar format. Great for beginners.
Attar (Oil): Slower-burning, more intimate, no alcohol. Once you get comfortable with oud, attars are the next level.
Step 3: How to Apply Oud Correctly
- Apply to clean, moisturised skin — fragrance lasts longer on hydrated skin
- Target pulse points — inner wrists, neck, behind ears, inner elbows
- Don’t rub your wrists together — this destroys the top notes
- 2–3 sprays maximum — oud is potent. Less is more.
- Let it breathe — give oud 15–30 minutes to open up before judging it
